School Nutrition Hero Day 2017 is almost here! On Friday, May 5, 2017, we’re recognizing the fifth annual School Lunch Hero Day, at the end of School Nutrition Employee Week (SNEW). SNA members know how much hard work goes into preparing school lunch—not to mention breakfast, snacks, supper, afterschool, and summer meals!—and School Lunch Hero Day is your opportunity to share that with others.
The School Nutrition Association has designated May 1-5, 2017, “School Nutrition Employee Week” to recognize the hard-working school nutrition professionals staffing our school cafeterias. Preparing nutritious meals for students is challenging, rewarding work, and SNEW is an opportunity to say “thank you” for all of that hard work; from adhering to strict nutrition standards to accommodating various food allergies, to the smile and encouragement they provide to their students each day. It’s not too late to give your school nutrition employees the shout-out they deserve with the following resources:
- Sample Press Release & SLHD Proclamation
- Suggestions on how to recognize your school nutrition superheroes
- Request forms for new downloadable artwork and logos
Don’t forget to check out new shareable content from SNA to help you positively promote your school meal program during SNEW, and all year; visit the School Lunch Hero Day website to learn more about the history of the holiday, and author Jarrett J. Krosoczka and his “Lunch Lady” series of graphic novels.
We also encourage you to share stories from the Beyond Breakfast blog; choose any of our scholarship stories, or School Nutrition Hero Award profiles, and share them on social media. You can also use them as inspiration to create your own profiles to share via social media. Take photos of your staff and ask them to share short anecdotes about how they came to work in school nutrition, and share them to Facebook. Don’t forget to add one or two of them to your next department or district newsletter!
Do you have a school nutrition hero in your life? Make a donation to the Annual Fund in their honor to say, “thank you”!
