School Nutrition Foundation Scholarships: Submit Your Application Now!

Here at the School Nutrition Foundation we have a fresh new crop of scholarships that are now in season! These scholarships won’t stay fresh forever—the deadline to apply is Monday, April 4, 2016. If you have been thinking about going back to school, but financial considerations have been holding you back, apply for a School Nutrition Foundation Professional Development scholarship. We have over $30,000 in funds available to help SNA members like you achieve their personal and professional goals.

Four scholarships are available for the 2016-17 school year, and they include:

  • Schwan’s Food Service Scholarship: Schwan’s Food Service makes an annual donation to offer multiple scholarships of up to $2500 each.
  • SNF Professional Growth Scholarship: Funded by SNA members through past special events, scholarships of up to $2500 are awarded.
  • Sandi Brooker Scholarship: To ensure that Sandi’s positive impact on so many people is continued, through helping others achieve their dream of continued education, two scholarships of $1000 each are awarded.
  • Nancy Curry Scholarship: Funded by Handguards, Inc., as well as Nancy’s friends, the Nancy Curry Scholarship awards one winner a $500 prize each year.

Application is a breeze with our Common Application that allows you to apply for all four scholarships in one step; we recommend downloading the Application Preparation Worksheet, which allows you to prepare your responses to be cut and pasted into the application form.

To be eligible for a Professional Development scholarship you must be an active SNA member, active for one year as of January 1, 2016, currently employed in foodservice, and enrolled (or will be enrolled) in a degree program at a vocational/technical, undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate level in the United States OR in a program of study that falls into one or more of the SNA Keys to Excellence subject areas.

Still hesitant about sending in your application? See what fellow SNA members had to say about their Foundation scholarships:

Martha Silverthorn, Griffith Public Schools, Indiana: “Without SNA I could never have gone back to school—raising three kids, I just wouldn’t have been able to. That’s what membership means—support is always there when you need it.”

Mark Bordeau, Broome-Tioga BOCES, New York: “School nutrition is a complex, in-depth program, and I wanted to go back to college so I could learn the latest and greatest business practices to do the best I can at the job I have. I’m also thinking of the future … going back to school gives me options for my present, and down the road when I retire.”

Sarah Maver, Registered Dietitian, Full-time student: “Even using my savings, I still had to take out a lot of loans, so this scholarship helped lighten that burden. I could work fewer hours at a part-time job, which is great. The scholarship was extremely valuable to me.”
